The cross-country Journey of Hope made its annual stop at University of Lynchburg this week. Thirty cyclists and eight crew members, all members of Pi Kappa Phi, are traversing the U.S. to benefit the fraternity’s national philanthropy, The Ability Experience.
The Ability Experience, founded in 1977, raises funds and awareness for people with disabilities. Journey of Hope, which originated in 1987, takes in more than $500,000 each summer for the charity.
Journey of Hope has been stopping at LC since 2011. Annette Stadtherr, the College’s director of multicultural services, helped arrange that first visit and has been involved each year since then. Her two sons are members of Pi Kappa Phi.
While at the College, the cyclists ate lunch in the ballroom, where they were greeted by University of Lynchburg president and fellow Pi Kappa Phi member Dr. Ken Garren.
Later, they met with two local organizations that work with people with disabilities, Links to Life and The ARC of Central Virginia. The cyclists then camped out for the night in Turner Gymnasium.
Journey of Hope will end its ride Aug. 12 in Washington, D.C.
“Many thanks to all who helped to accommodate our special guests for this worthwhile program, as these young college men cycle across the U.S., bringing awareness and raising funds for people with disabilities,” Annette said.
“As a Phi Kap mom, two times, this program and these young men are extra special to me, and I deeply appreciate that we host them every year.”
