The Daura Museum of Art is located in the Dillard Fine Arts Building on the campus of the University of Lynchburg. The museum facility consists of exhibition galleries, collection storage, collections management workrooms, and staff offices.

The ability of the Daura Museum to meet its responsibility of protecting and preserving its collections is directly linked to the physical facility and to the human resources and procedures dedicated toward that end. In keeping with AAM and AAMG best practices, the museum’s commitment to risk reduction is achieved through security devices, environmental controls, policies and protocols, and minimal handling of collections.

Facility Usage

The Daura Museum’s primary function is for art and cultural exhibitions, programming, and special events. The Daura Museum and the Dillard Lobby Gallery may also be used for University-related functions.

If interested in requesting the use of the Daura Museum, please read the information below and contact 434.544.8595 to inquire about reservations. A University of Lynchburg Calendar Room Request must also be made in order to reserve the Museum. The University Calendar Coordinator submits all requests to the Director of the Daura Museum for approval prior to confirming any reservations.

Facility Usage Policy
  • The Daura Museum of Art is used primarily for University of Lynchburg-related functions and should relate to or benefit from the Daura Museum’s mission and/or its exhibitions.
  • A Daura Museum staff member or student employee must be in the Museum offices for any event held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A staff member or student employee must be present during any evening or weekend event. There is a $25/hour fee for any event beginning after 4 p.m.
  • Requests by non-University of Lynchburg-related organizations or individuals (e.g., receptions, meetings, workshops) will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • The Daura Museum of Art has first priority for use, and in the case of multiple requests, the Daura Museum of Art will be given preference.
  • Requests for use of the Daura Museum of Art must be cleared by the Director of the Daura Museum of Art (434.544.8595) prior to requesting reservations with the University of Lynchburg Event Coordinator.
  • Reservations made through the University’s Event Coordinator must be authorized/approved by the Director of the Daura Museum prior to finalization of the reservation.
  • The Director of the Daura Museum of Art may refuse to schedule any group with a past record of problematic behavior. The Director may refuse and/or restrict any usage of the Museum, based on current exhibitions and installations in progress.
  • There is a limit of a maximum of 75 people in each gallery at one time.
  • Requests for seating/tables, audio-visual, or other equipment must be made through the Event Coordinator. The user group is responsible for the proper use of any equipment and for any costs for the rental of or damage to any equipment. The University’s media services department will coordinate set-ups in advance with the Daura Museum of Art.
  • In the event that the event is canceled or postponed, both the Daura Museum of Art and the Calendar Coordinator will be notified immediately.
  • A $100 service fee ($95.69 + $4.31 sales tax) + $25/hour is charged to any non-University of Lynchburg/University-related group. This service fee may be waived at the discretion of the Director of the Daura Museum of Art, or at the request of the University of University administration, based on the purpose of the event and/or non-profit status of the organization. Non-profit organizations must submit a tax-exempt form and Certificate of Insurance prior to the scheduled event.
  • For University-related functions, the faculty or staff, or faculty/staff advisor for any student group should be present and is responsible for adhering to all conditions of this policy, and for the condition of the galleries at the conclusion of the event.
  • For non-University functions, the organizing/requesting official of the organization should be present and is responsible for adhering to all conditions of this policy, and for the condition of the galleries at the conclusion of the event.
  • Under no circumstances will the Daura Museum of Art be left unattended. When an evening or weekend event concludes, a Museum staff member (in the Museum offices) must be notified immediately.
Restrictions
  • All events should conclude no later than 9:30 p.m., including time needed for clean-up, unless prior arrangements are made.
  • Works of art, display pedestals or other exhibition materials may not be touched, moved, or otherwise handled. Furniture will not be moved without prior arrangements.
  • Light levels are adjusted for the safety and security of works of art on exhibition. Higher light levels must be requested in advance, with approval based on the current exhibition. No overhead fluorescent lights will be turned on without approval.
  • No open flames, including candles, are allowed.
  • Live floral or plant arrangements are not allowed in the Daura Museum of Art. Dried or silk floral or plant arrangements may be substituted upon request.
  • Restrictions on food service may apply. The location of food service tables must be approved by the Director of the Museum.
  • Steam-producing cooking vessels and open flames (i.e., candles) are not allowed, with the exception of chafing dishes. Chafing dishes should not be placed against a wall containing any work of art. Coffee and tea are to be served in pump-pots.
  • Display pedestals or other exhibition materials may not be used for food service or for the display of floral arrangements.
Responsibilities
  • It is the responsibility of the user group to maintain appropriate behavior and assume control of their participants.
  • If food is to be served, all catering must be arranged through the University of Lynchburg’s Catering Department (434.544.8248). The user group is responsible for all arrangements and costs associated with food service.
  • Non-University organizations must use the University’s catering department for any food service.
  • All left-over food and trash must be removed from the galleries immediately at the conclusion of the event, and any spilled or crushed food cleaned up. The user group will make arrangements with Catering or take this responsibility.
  • The Daura Museum’s kitchen is available for food service preparation. All food must be properly stored or removed at the conclusion of the events, the counters cleaned, and any large spills on the floor cleaned as best as possible. The user group must make arrangements with Catering or take this responsibility.
  • Should any damage occur to either works of art, the galleries, or the facility itself due to negligence, the user group shall be responsible for costs associated with cleaning or repairs, and/or conservation treatment of the works of art.
Procedures for Facility Use
  1. Check the University event calendar to make sure there are no conflicts with the date of your event. Verify that the Daura Museum is available at that time (remember, the Museum is closed at times for exhibition installation/de-installation).
  2. Complete the Request for Facility Usage form and submit it for approval by the director of the Daura Museum.
  3. If your request is approved, you and the University’s event coordinator will be notified.
  4. You can then complete and submit the Room Reservation form to the Event Coordinator. Be sure to complete the Catering Request form for any food service.
  5. At least one week prior to your event, contact the Daura Museum staff to request or confirm any special needs such as chairs, computers, projector, etc.
