The professorship was established in 1989 through a bequest from Geraldine Lyon Owen, Class of 1927, in memory of her family.
It was established in 1977 by an endowment gift from Margaret East Nelson of Norfolk, Virginia, in memory of her father, who served on the Lynchburg College Board of Trustees from 1917 to 1921.
In 1992, the John M. Turner Jr. fund was established to honor his contributions to the University of Lynchburg. The fund supports a humanities professorship, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and matched 3:1 by alumni, employees, and friends of the University.
