Phi Sigma Tau, the International Honor Society in Philosophy, recognizes outstanding academic achievement in philosophy and attempts to promote interest in philosophy across campus.
The Society was founded at Muhlenberg College in 1930. Its purpose is to promote ties among philosophy departments in accredited institutions and among philosophy majors and minors nationally. Both on the local and national levels, Phi Sigma Tau aims to develop and honor academic excellence as well as promote the study of philosophy.
Virginia Kappa, University of Lynchburg’s chapter of Phi Sigma Tau, was chartered in 2010. Membership is highly selective and is determined according to the following criteria:
- Declare a philosophy major or minor;
- Hold at least junior class status;
- Complete at least four philosophy courses with 3.0 average or greater;
- Hold a class rank at least in the highest 35th percentile in general scholarship; and
- Be approved unanimously by the Department of Philosophy faculty.
At the induction ceremony, members receive a certificate and a subscription to Dialogue, the official journal of Phi Sigma Tau. Graduating seniors are presented with honor cords to be worn at Commencement.
The faculty advisor for Phi Sigma Tau is Dr. Devon Brickhouse-Bryson, assistant professor of philosophy.
