Scholarships

There are a variety of scholarships available for international study. Search online using the keywords “scholarships,” “international study,” and “study abroad” – and for scholarships for study in specific countries.

Begin your applications well in advance. Some of the application processes for scholarships listed below are rather involved. Be prepared to write several drafts of your application essays. You should seek the assistance of your academic advisor and the study abroad office.

And remember – you can’t be awarded money if you don’t apply, or if you miss the deadline!

University of Lynchburg Scholarships

The College has a number of endowed funds to support students who study abroad. Deadlines for these awards are in October for spring programs and March for summer and fall programs for the following academic year.

David J. Lipani Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

This fund was established by former students, colleagues, and friends to honor Dr. Lipani for his involvement in and passion for study abroad learning. Dr. Lipani began his tenure at the college in 1976 as an associate professor of English. Over the years he has taught numerous undergraduate courses, and since 1991, he has led student study abroad programs to places such as Spain, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Vietnam, Ireland, Great Britain, France, Belgium, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Annual income from this fund will support deserving students who have financial need and desire to participate in a University of Lynchburg approved study abroad program.

Shoemaker International Travel Scholarship

This fund was established in 2001 by Andrew S. Miller, Class of 2000, and Dr. M. Wesley Shoemaker, professor emeritus of history. The fund provides as many annual scholarships as possible, increasing international awareness and opportunities, encouraging international study, and promoting the study of foreign language. Annual income from the fund provides scholarship support for deserving students who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in a non-English speaking country.

Kristy Dawn Overstreet Study Abroad Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by Kristy’s parents, classmates, family, and friends to perpetuate Kristy’s memory and love for study abroad. A graduate of Liberty High School in Bedford, Virginia, Kristy was in her senior year at the College and majoring in international relations when she was killed in a automobile accident on June 29, 2005. Annual income from the fund supports deserving students who have financial need and wish to participate in a University of Lynchburg-approved study abroad program.

A. Kendall and Grace P. Sydnor International Study Abroad Scholarship

This fund was established in 2005 by A. Kendall Sydnor, Jr. ’64, Granville Sydnor Hill, and Judith Sydnor McNeel to honor their parents. Annual income from this fund supports qualified students who demonstrate financial need, pursue a degree in a field of business, education, or music, and participate in a University of Lynchburg-approved study abroad program. Preference is given to students from the Central Virginia area.

The Rosel H. and Elliot S. Schewel Study Abroad Fund

This fund was established in 2007 by Rosel H. and Elliot S. Schewel. The Schewels have been longtime supporters of University of Lynchburg and of the broader Lynchburg community. Rosel was a member of the School of Education and Human Development faculty for 18 years and, subsequently, she served as chair of the University of Lynchburg Board of Trustees. Elliot was a Virginia State Senator for Lynchburg, Amherst, and Bedford, Virginia, serving 20 years in the Virginia legislature. Annual income from this fund provides support for students participating in University of Lynchburg-sponsored study abroad programs across all academic disciplines.

Vanauken Fellowship Award

This award was established in 1984 by friends of Sheldon Vanauken and his late wife, Jean Davis Vanauken, and honors a professor emeritus of history and English at the College. Annual income from this fund is awarded to a selected rising senior for summer study at England’s Oxford University and recipients must complete graduation requirements at University of Lynchburg.

Rona L. Adams and Brian Adams Yates Scholarship

This fund was established in 2006 by Ashleigh Adams Rempfer ’04 and her sisters, Adrienne Adams Blankenship and Victoria Adams Kotsch, as a lasting memorial to their mother, Rona ’06, and brother, Brian. Annual income from this fund provides fellowship grants for study abroad to deserving students who are pursuing a major or minor in the College’s English and history programs.

Dr. Curtis Millner ’53 Study Abroad Scholarship Fund

This award was established to perpetuate Dr. Millner’s memory and love for the Spanish language and literature. Dr. Millner graduated from LC in 1953 with a BA in Spanish. He received his MA from Yale University in 1956 and PhD from UCLA in 1968. Dr. Millner taught at numerous colleges and universities during his career, and his major field of study was Hispanic languages and literatures. Annual income from this fund shall be awarded to deserving students who wish to participate in a University of Lynchburg approved study abroad program in Spain for one or more semesters. Only students whose native or primary language is not Spanish can receive this scholarship.

National Scholarships

David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarship

The Institute of International Education funds the National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships for study abroad. NSEP Boren Scholarships are available to degree-seeking undergraduates. Emphasized world regions include Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, the NIS, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship

This is the largest privately funded international scholarship program. Preference is given to studies in non-English speaking countries, but a limited number of awards are given to students studying in the UK. Applicants must have completed two years of study at a U.S. university and be under the age of 25. All applicants must be citizens of a country in which there are Rotary clubs. Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Institute of International Education (IIE) funds the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by IIE through its Southern Regional Center in Houston, Texas, this program enables students who have limited financial means the opportunity to participate in undergraduate study abroad opportunities worldwide. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for U.S. citizen undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions to pursue country-based study abroad programs of up to one academic year. To be eligible students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application and cannot be studying abroad in a country currently under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or in Cuba. Phi Kappa Phi Scholarships

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi offers Study Abroad Grants designed to recognize and assist undergraduates as they seek knowledge abroad. Twenty grants of $1,000 are awarded annually. To apply, students should have a 3.5 GPA. Website: http://www.phikappaphi.org/Web/Awards/Study_Abroad.html
