About 70 incoming freshmen will attend the Summer Transition Program (STP) Aug. 13-18 to get a jump-start on adjusting to college life.
University of Lynchburg began the program in 1987 to aid students of diverse ethnic, religious, and racial backgrounds in making a successful transition to college. In recent years, the College has expanded the program to include, first-generation college students and those who are Pell-Grant eligible.
This year’s entering class is the most ethnically diverse in the College’s history at 17 percent. About one-fourth of the students are the first in their families to attend college.
Students will have sessions on navigating the academic, financial, and social challenges of college life, as well as sessions on getting to know themselves through College Student Inventory results, and Myers-Briggs Type Indicator testing. These tools will be used to help with their academic and career goals.
STP participants will also have computer training and learn about scholarship opportunities for study abroad, internships, and research.
University of Lynchburg will be launching Experiential Learning Grants (ELGs) for all full-time undergraduate students to use for winter/summer terms beginning in December 2010. ELGs are tuition credit vouchers that can be used to cover half of the tuition charges, up to a total of three credits, for these experiences. Every full-time undergraduate will be granted one ELG voucher per year that can be used for up to three credits per year until they graduate.
Also new is the Expanding Your Horizons program for first-generation college students; those in the program will qualify for $750 scholarships provided through funding from the Walmart Foundation for study abroad, internships, and research.
