Presented by Rev. Dennis S. Roberts.
The term “witch hunt” has been used repeatedly in recent years as an attempt to dismiss the ever-growing list of accusations, outrages, scandals, and criminal offenses in our current political environment. However, what about the real thing? This presentation will provide an overview of the witch craze and deadly witch hunts of the early modern European era, roughly from 1450 to 1750, with a focus on the Germanic regions of Western Europe. It will then explore contemporary attacks on women’s rights – whether by populist forces desperate to gain power, religious forces enmeshed in unholy alliances with the powers that be, or authoritarian governments eager to maintain and extend their power.
