Third Thursday Movie Night: Smoke Signals

February 17, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Acclaimed as one of the best films of the year, “Smoke Signals” was also a distinguished winner at the Sundance Film Festival. This is the first feature film made by a Native American crew and creative team. The screenplay was written by Sherman Alexie, who also wrote “The Lone Ranger” and “Tonto Fistfight in Heaven” (1993).

The film is about two young men from the Coeur D’Alene Indian Reservation in Idaho. They remember different things about Arnold Joseph (Gary Farmer), a former resident of the reservation who left years ago and died in Phoenix. Arnold’s son Victor (Adam Beach) remembers him as an alcoholic father who drove off one day and never came back. But Thomas Builds-the-Fire (Evan Adams), whom Arnold had saved from certain death years earlier, tells a different story. He exaggerates Arnold’s life and deeds in a way that makes him a hero. In 2018, the film was selected for the National Film Registry.

Rated PG-13, Run time: one hour and 29 minutes

This film screening is offered in conjunction with the Daura Museum of Art exhibition “Metaphor, Myth, and Politics: Art From Native Printmakers.”

  • This event is free and open to the public.
