Funding Your Amtryke
Although we don’t require families to pay for Amtrykes, we do ask that they do the best they can to raise money and make a donation. We’re happy to provide fundraising tips. For more information, email wotjfundraising@lynchburg.edu.
Our History
Wheels on the James was founded in April 2011 by Nancy Wellons and a board of seven others. Nancy wanted to pay forward one of the many kindnesses shown to her son, James Howard, a retired Army captain who sustained a spinal cord injury from a diving accident at age 28 that left him a quadriplegic.
James received a therapeutic cycle from an AMBUCS chapter in Lubbock, Texas, at a bike ride for disabled veterans and others.
The mission of Wheels on the James is to help disabled children, teens, adults, wounded warriors, and schools with special needs students in the greater Lynchburg area receive similar cycles. For recipients, these donated cycles open doors to independence, mobility, recreation, and exercise.
