The Distinguished Alumni Award honors alumni who have made outstanding contributions to one or more areas of society, including professional, academic, and service to Lynchburg.

Honorary Alumni Award
The Honorary Alumni Award, presented since 1986, honors non-alumni of Lynchburg for exceptional interest, dedication, and/or service to Lynchburg.

John G. Eccles Student Leadership Award
Established in 2016 by the Lynchburg Alumni Board (Association), this award honors John G. Eccles and his service to Lynchburg from 1986 to 2016. The award is presented to one undergraduate student each year who has shown exceptional leadership capabilities through energetic participation in student activities, dedication to Lynchburg, and engagement with the alumni association. This award is intended to recognize a student leader who emulates John G. Eccles’ integrity, sense of humor, and passion for leadership at Lynchburg.

M. Carey Brewer Alumni Award
The M. Carey Brewer Alumni Award, honoring Dr. Carey Brewer ’49, the seventh president of Lynchburg College, has been presented since 1983. Recipients of the award have made an outstanding contribution in one area of society, including civic, religious life, or service to alma mater.

Sports Hall of Fame
The Lynchburg Sports Hall of Fame was established in 1978 to recognize and honor outstanding athletes and teams for their athletic performance, leadership, and team contributions while students at Lynchburg. Since 1975, men’s athletics and in 1981, women’s athletics began competition in Division 3 of the NCAA.
Annually, the Lynchburg Alumni Association, through its Board of Directors, appoints a committee to review the nominations for the Sports Hall of Fame. Any alumnus/a, staff member, or friend of Lynchburg may make nominations for this award.

T. Gibson Hobbs Memorial Award
The T. Gibson Hobbs Memorial Award, named for the late Thomas Gibson Hobbs, a member of Lynchburg’s first graduating class (1904), is the highest honor given to an alumnus or alumna of Lynchburg by the Lynchburg Alumni Association.
The award is given to alumni who demonstrate an exemplary record of service in each of 3 areas: church (interpreted in a broad and ecumenical manner as deemed appropriate), community, and alma mater.

The Kenneth R. Garren Award
This award was established in 2019 by the Lynchburg Alumni Association. It honors Dr. Kenneth R. Garren and his service to Lynchburg College/University of Lynchburg as its president from 2001-20. The award is given yearly to one University of Lynchburg graduate student who is engaged in class, mentors other students, participates in conferences and helps promote the graduate program to prospective students within their field.
