Honors student spends his summer fighting poverty, serving refugees
Jacob Jones ’25, a Westover Honors Fellow at the University of Lynchburg, spent his summer working with immigrants and refugees from all over the world at the New Arrivals Institute, a charity in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Westover Honors Fellow with ‘passion for helping others’ named Sommerville Scholar
Kelsey Spickler ’24, a Westover Honors Fellow from Bridgewater, Virginia, has been named the 2023-24 Richard Clarke Sommerville Scholar. The award, the University of Lynchburg’s highest academic honor, was presented on Nov. 13 at the West Room in Drysdale Student Center.

Alana Compton ’23 has been named the winner of the 2023 Robert L. Hill Distinguished Senior Award. The award, one of the University of Lynchburg’s highest honors for undergraduate students, was presented on Friday, April 14, during the annual academic awards ceremony.
Westover Fellow to teach English in Germany
A University of Lynchburg history major and Westover Honors Fellow has been awarded a grant through the U.S. Fulbright Student Program to teach English in Germany. Rick Smallshaw ’23, a Lynchburg, Virginia, resident with minors in medieval and Renaissance studies and German, will leave for Germany in mid-September.
