Residential Experience Policies
Crisis Information
The University of Lynchburg has implemented measures to prepare for various emergencies, focusing on planning and awareness. Effective communication ensures that students, employees, and visitors know how to respond and where to find information during emergencies.
Since many students live on campus, this site is a key resource for sharing emergency plans and information. For power outages due to inclement weather or other causes, familiarize yourself with our FAQs at the bottom of this webpage.
Remaining Students Policy:
All students, except international students, must leave campus within the set timeline. Those needing to stay must get permission from the Office of Residential Experience. The allowed stay timeframe will vary by crisis. During the flu pandemic, the campus will be closed for approximately 12 weeks as per CDC guidelines. Students staying must follow all instructions from the residential experience. Once a student leaves during a pandemic flu, they cannot return until the crisis ends. Disruptive students will be required to leave immediately.
Residential Closure During a Crisis:
The Crisis Management Team and Residential Experience will decide on campus closure during a crisis. If closed, all residential facilities will be vacated within 48 hours. Students will receive instructions via flyers, emails, and the website. They should pack essentials: ID, cash, phone (immediate departure); water, snacks, medication (few hours); computer, clothing (more than 6 hours). Students must complete an Emergency Closure departure form indicating travel plans.
Severe Weather Warning or Crisis Alert:
The University has three outdoor warning sirens for emergencies threatening outdoor safety. If sirens sound for severe weather or a tornado warning:
- Seek cover in the nearest building.
- Stay in interior rooms or hallways, or move to the lowest level.
- Avoid windows and glass.
- Monitor the web and email for updates.
- Call 911 for damage or injuries.
- Stay until the “all clear” is given by sirens or officials.
Security alerts and safety announcements are also issued via email. Students should download the LiveSafe app for important notices related to severe weather on or near campus.
Housing Accommodations
The University of Lynchburg provides reasonable housing accommodations for individuals with disabilities. Students with verifiable needs should complete the Disability Accommodations Request Form as soon as possible before moving in. Requests made less than 60 days before move-in may not be guaranteed for the first semester. Apply through Accessibility and Disability Resources, and review guidelines early.
Gender-inclusive Housing
The Office of Residential Experience supports students of all gender identities. Any information shared is confidential and will only be used as designated by the student. However, this policy does not apply to romantic couples. When making roommate requests, you are not required to disclose reasons. You can contact residentialexperience@lynchburg.edu or use the Housing Portal to indicate your preferences.
Gender-inclusive Housing Policy:
- Available to new and returning residents.
- Allows transgender, genderqueer, non-binary, and non-conforming students to choose housing based on their identity.
- Important for students exploring their gender identity, not identifying by gender, LGBTQIA+ students, and those comfortable with mixed communities.
Gender-inclusive Housing Options:
- Available in all residential facilities, including University-owned houses, Peaksview Apartments, and Townhouses.
- First-year options (Montgomery Hall and Tate Hall) have gender-inclusive restrooms with private showers on each floor.
