In celebration of National Women’s History Month, the Daura Museum of Art presents artwork by Marie Tiner, scientist, artist, and mother of longtime University of Lynchburg Latin professor Dr. Elza Tiner.

“Winter Scene of Mountains With Birch Trees,” acrylic on canvas, gift of Jack D. Tiner.

The exhibition, “The Art of a Scientist: The Works of Marie Tiner,” is on display in the Daura’s Gallery II through Wednesday, April 16.

After graduating from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in physics and pre-med, Tiner studied physics and chemistry in Illinois before marrying Jack Tiner in 1951 and giving birth to her daughter in 1952.

She later worked at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey and studied physics at Rutgers University and X-ray crystallography at The Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. She started taking art classes in 1960.

According to her bio, Tiner’s “familiarity with crystal structures and mathematical forms gained in those studies later inspired her approach to painting and sculpture.”

The Daura Museum of Art is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the academic year. It’s closed for holidays and University breaks. Admission is free. For more information, call 434.544.8595.

Next month, artwork by University of Lynchburg students will go on display in the Dillard Fine Arts Center Lobby Gallery. The University’s Annual Student Juried Art Exhibition opens on Thursday, April 10, and runs through Thursday, May 8.
